Wall Requirements
Your wall needs to be painted for a successful install... and dry. Recently painted walls need to dry for 4 to 6 weeks. When painting with low VOC paints you need to wash the wall with rubbing alcohol prior to installing your mural.
The wall needs to be in good conditions and clean, no cracking paint, humidity spots, stains, or dust. If you are not sure about your type of paint wash the wall with rubbing alcohol prior to installation.
Wall murals need to be installed over a smooth wall, free of texture or decorative finishes. They are are not safe when installed over textured walls. -
What Types of Walls Won't Work?
1 - Unpainted walls
2 - Cracking paint
3 - Humidity spots
4 - Knockdown
5 - Hard orange peel
6 - Acoustic texture
7 - Popcorn
8 - Palette knife -
Why Won't Murals Work on Textured Walls?
Our reposition able murals have a good structural resistance but a low grade of adhesion. While this feature allows you to remove with no structural damage and replace freely, it also needs a full contact surface to stay put. Also consider that murals can weigh up to 3 pounds, for a soft adhesive trying to hold three pounds vertically without a good grip will eventually fail .
When a mural is not attached properly it won’t fall right away. It can take days or even weeks before it starts coming off, and this is a dangerous situation with kids and babies around.
If you wish to still use a wall mural but your wall is textured you need to smooth the wall with joint compound first, let it dry, apply a layer of paint and also let it dry prior to installation. -
What if I Have Low-VOC Paint?
Low or No VOC paints are less toxic and overall safest in the market. Formulations in these types of paints vary so much the behavior of peel and stick adhesives over them is unpredictable. You do not need to avoid them if you want to install a repositionable wall mural. Washing your wall with rubbing alcohol will avoid any adhesion troubles.
Low VOC paint creates a layer over the wall that contaminates the adhesive in the wallpaper ruining the wallpaper adhesive forever. For that reason the washing must be done before placing the wallpaper, not after. If you have trouble with a wallpaper sticking already installed over a painted wall with VOC paints, by washing the wall you are not going to be able to make the wallpaper stick again. -
How Should I Wash My Low-VOC Painted Walls?
Prepare a cleaning solution with 70 % isopropyl alcohol and 30 % water in a spray bottle, or just buy a bottle of 70% Rubbing Alcohol at the pharmacy that's already prepared and ready to use.
Soak a clean, lint-free cloth with the cleaning solution until it is dripping wet.
Clean the installation area with overlapping strokes. Especially in the first cleaning, you may notice some migrated paint particles on the cloth.
Thoroughly soak another clean cloth with the cleaning solution and wash the wall again. Installers have found that cleaning the wall two to three times with the mixture can boost adhesion for nearly any peel and stick applied to a painted wall.
Touch the wall immediately. It will feel cooler to the touch than an unwashed area, due to the alcohol in the cleaning solution. When it no longer feels cool, it is dry and you can proceed with the installation of your wall mural.
